Longitudinal research can analyze data at either the individual or the aggregate level. Aggregate-level data characterize spatial and temporal units – for example, time series such as annual unemployment and mental hospitalization rates for a state. Such data may originate from individual-level interviews or records, but the aggregation process shears off the individuals’ personal characteristics. Studies of such concomitant time series provide good protection against the rival explanation of selection or reverse causation.

The complex details of this debate need not concern us here (for more in-depth treatment, see Wagstaff, 1985). Despite such difficulties, a persuasive logic for the general approach of aggregate time-series analysis and an alternative statistical strategy based on Box-Jenkins methods have been offered for use in unemployment studies (Catalano, 1981; Catalano, Dooley, & Jackson, 1983). But regardless of how one comes down on this dispute, a second challenge to such aggregate methodology remains. The second major concern about aggregate time-series research arises not from its statistical procedures but rather from the fundamental limits on the interpretations that it can support.
