It’s as if the very fact of these series being animated overrides the ways in which they rely on sitcom; in doing so, such analysis reiterates the idea that whenever sitcom does anything beyond the ‘coherent’ and ‘stable’ definition applied to it, it becomes something else. A similar problem arises in the examination of comedy drama.
This is of particular importance because texts which most obviously signal their generic characteristics are commonly seen to be of low cultural value. Barry Langford notes that there is ‘cultural privilege attached to “originality”’ (2005: 8) which means the term ‘generic’ can often have negative connotations. Later in this chapter, it will be argued that sitcom has often been defined as an easily understood genre, whose characteristics are evident and unchanging. While this might make it a genre which is easier to ‘place’, it means the sitcom has often occupied a low cultural position, repeatedly criticised for its stability and lack of originality.
In noting that comedy must be signalled as such, Gehring makes a useful point about genre, which reiterates its value as encouraging certain kinds of reading practice. However, in avoiding elements such as narrative and aesthetics, he posits comedy as a broader category within which a range of possible formats exist. Comedy can, then, be seen as a mode of expression rather than a form, and sitcom is only one possible way in which that mode can be articulated within broadcasting. Acknowledging the modal links between sitcom and other comedy genres might, then, offer useful insights into the ways in which its characteristics draw on and influence those of other forms.
