February 11, 2001, the day they blew up Three Rivers Stadium to pave the way for Heinz Field, was bittersweet for some of us, as many a memorable Steelers game took place in that old stadium between 1970 and 2000. But time added more memories. The fifth championship— finally one for the thumb, and the first Pittsburgh Super Bowl win of this century—punctuated the end of an amazing playoff run. Local Steelers fans and I gathered at a sports bar for that one. Black and Gold backers want some rings for the other hand, though our loyalty to the team remains no matter what.

In certain cases, a play during the regular season or playoffs that later made a Super Bowl victory possible often ranked higher in my mind than a memorable moment during a championship game. I mixed old plays with new, success with a dash of heartbreak. Records were noted. Several plays that involve opposing quarterbacks falling short of their intentions are included. At times, a seemingly less dramatic play, though still great in importance, is highlighted at the start or end of a series of others in certain games—in several cases big comebacks from scoring deficits.
