Some Barcelona fans almost miss it. They’re busy celebrating Messi’s goal. THERE HAVE BEEN 225 CLÁSICOS IN ALL, with Real Madrid winning ninety and Barcelona eighty-seven. The numbers rack up quickly: October 2012 was the thirteenth clásico in less than two years, such is the dominance of these two sides, and by the end of the season there would be three more of them. It all began at the Madrid Hippodrome on May 13, 1902, just a few hundred yards south of the Santiago Bernabéu. Soccer was far from the mass sport it is now.

Sadly, Antoni Ramallets and Josep Seguer passed away soon after this book was first published. Thanks are also due to the protagonists who spoke to me for this book but preferred not to be named and the many others who have enriched the story. Other interviews conducted over the years with players like Oleguer Presas, Raúl, Paco Pavón, Paco Gento, and David Beckham have also been drawn upon.
