Both Tait and Cocozza’s work was mostly self-funded. The comparative lack of local support or recognition for their experimental films can be blamed on an inability to recognise work that broke with established forms of representation, a problem which still confronts many Scottish filmmakers today. While Tait’s films were screened internationally, the majority of showings in Britain took place in England.

The limitations of the sound and animation technology at Dove’s disposal are used to her advantage, producing an effect that mimics modernist abstraction’s somewhat clunky and naïve pursuit of unity in diversity. Many of Dove’s early collaged films are optical noise, largely nonnarrative and non-naturalistic images set to musical accompaniments that generate a pulse. Certainly, such effects were felt long before the ’90s. Neil Mulholland 29 very often a passive—or, at most, autoerotic—viewing experience distinctly at odds with the aspirations of the pioneers of socially engaged artist's video; something that was highly visible in agit-Scratch work produced in Britain in the 1980s. Scratch took a more active stance in relation to the post-production thesis, an equivalent of turntablism (Souvignier 2003).
