Once your walls are built, it's time to put on the roof. There are many options for root cellar roofs, but keep in mind that it will have to bear a significant load once you cover much of the structure with soil. Consult with a roofing expert on exactly what kind of designs can bear the load your cellar will require, but as a rule, you will need strong support rafters, and you will need to build the roof at such an angle that it takes pressure off the walls once the soil goes on top. The beauty of creating a cellar roof is that it only has to be functional; no one will see it.
You will need to scale sizes and quantities to match your needs, which your local building supply store should be able to help you with (especially if you are about to make a large purchase with them). Tools: • One or two long-handed shovels, plus a trench shovel for squaring off the hole you dig • A hoe, or something to spread concrete, plus a wooden float to smooth it • A wheelbarrow • Mortarboard, trowel and jointer tool • A level and a tape measure • A plumb bob • A hammer and a masonry chisel • A saw to cut any lumber • A keyhole saw for specialized cutting • A plane for trimming rafters • A set of screwdrivers and wrenches • A caulking gun Materials for the floor: • Stakes to mark off the area • String • Boards to establish the floor's perimeter • Ready-mix concrete Materials for the walls: • Hollow concrete blocks • Masonry cement Wood: You will be building a ceiling and a door with a frame, plus a set of stairs.
