There are also certain categories of user, with special requirements, of which two significant groups are students and tourists. While the broad principles of transport operation apply in all sectors and to all user categories, there are some fundamental differences, as discussed below. Urban Transport The provision of public transport in urban areas has become a major problem in most developing countries, in some respects more so than in developed countries. A major cause is rapid urban population growth, resulting in increased demand with which many transport systems are unable to cope adequately, compounded by low levels of income, inadequate road infrastructure, uncontrolled use of private transport, severe traffic congestion, and inadequate and inefficient public transport systems.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS All of the principal transport modes consume non-renewable resources, principally oil, and produce pollutants which cause permanent environmental damage. In urban areas, an increasing proportion of the land area is being consumed by roads, which are often congested with traffic for most of the day, detracting seriously from the quality of life, while major intercity highways often cause environmental damage in rural areas. The provision of transport is therefore having a serious impact on the environment all over the world.

They have many of the characteristics of heavy rail systems but are constructed to cater for vehicles of lower weight and usually to smaller dimensions. As a result they can be significantly cheaper in terms of both capital and operating costs, although capacity is also lower. Street tramway systems are LRT systems which operate on city streets alongside other traffic, and as such have much in common with conventional bus services: they do not require special infrastructure at stopping places, which may be spaced as closely as every 300 metres, or even less.
