The odds are overwhelmingly against you. The ultimate goal should be to get your book published. And not by just Knopf or Random House, either. ) Even though there were flashes of careerism among my classmates when I was an MFA student in the late 1980s, students are a lot savvier now, and there appears to be an ideal track to follow, a right agent to get, a pecking order for publications, and little acknowledgment of serendipity, luck, and chance’s role in their careers. But I guarantee you, there is also a lot of disappointment.

He wrote what would become his first published novel, The Book of Ralph, against the wishes of his then-​agent. His short stories have received far more rejections than acceptances, and most of the stories from his first five years of writing never found a home. He’s edited six anthologies but has had at least as many book proposals turned down. Although he has held the University of Wisconsin’s prestigious Carl Djerassi fellowship, he received it a full ten years after he applied for it the first time.
