Lack of knowledge with respect to speed and power presents a problem for both coach and player for it is the greater controlled power of his/her game which is the distinguishing feature of the world class player.
The programme need not be supervised by the coach but should be under his direction. It will need to be monitored and adjusted periodically in the light of progress. Practice and Competition Part of the time spent in practice should be given over to simulating competitive conditions. The more experience a player has of gradually increasing degrees of competition the better he will be able to cope and to manage stress. Gradually increasing competitive stress creates resources in the player so that he learns to control and to regulate his emotions.
The first part of the chapter is devoted to the results of my research involving British junior tennis competitors. The conclusions which are drawn have significance for a number of individual competitive ball games and for most sports to varying degrees. The adage ‘practice makes perfect’ needs qualification.
