His conclusion was that ‘if you can’t trust statistics you’re obliged to rely on anecdotal evidence’. One could hope that what the statistics indicate or imply is then heartily supported by this other evidence – then you know you are on the right track. But is it really possible to compare? How can we gauge Hashim Amla against WG Grace beyond beard measurements, is it really possible to measure Michael Slater scoring 123 out of 198 with Len Hutton’s 364 in a score of 903? Jack Brown’s searing series-winning ton against Jessops’s legendary deeds in a dead rubber?

As to the written word, no innings has attracted such plaudits as Stan McCabe’s 232 against England in 1938 and it has been rewarded accordingly – but like all the other categories, this is just one element that contributes to the overall picture. Ten – Compatibility With two of the most important categories it is glaringly obvious that there is a link that needs exploring, namely the compatibility of the bowling attack to the prevalent conditions. How many Indian finger spinners have relished a sprightly Auckland greentop or English seamers the dry and dusty languor of Galle.

But it would be foolish to presume that the speed of an innings is as important on the first morning of a five-day Test as it is on the last day amidst a frantic run chase. These may be extremes although even here one can see the advantage of Don Bradman hitting 300 on day one at Headingley in 1930 over Geoff Boycott grinding out 106 on the same ground in 1967. More difficult are the intermediate innings. How, for example, do we judge a batsman who comes in after the opposition has been bowled out for 150 at tea on the first day knowing that he can bat for eight sessions and ensure a draw and probably a victory for his side if he does so?
