Chaikin’s reasons for collaboration were somewhat different from the spontaneity of Living Theatre in the same period, and he was critical of practice that relied solely on a post-Freudian belief in psychic conditioning. As a tool of social mobilisation, the living newspaper provided the desired balance between factual information and political comment which appealed to activist theatre-makers. The Federal Theater, working in 1930s’ New York, offered its analysis of social problems arising from the agricultural depression in the form of a living newspaper called Triple-A Ploughed Under, which was staged in 1936. Triple-A comprised twenty-six short scenes, using characteristic living newspaper devices such as radio announcements, cartoon-style characters, projected diagrams and various forms of direct address through loud speakers and mass recitation.
