THE RESPONSIBLE SUPERVISOR OR TEAM LEADER Activities of first-line supervision should be focused on leadership, instruction, oversight, control and training in methods, workmanship, quality, feedback, and housekeeping. Given the demands of daily maintenance execution, supervisors are forced to concentrate on the immediacy of today’s problems and have little time left to focus on effective preparation for future activities. If they are tasked to address both preparation and execution, planning for future jobs is almost always neglected due to the pressure of today’s work.

Similarly, when the material management system is complex and system knowledge is limited, the material coordinator position should be considered. Although more difficult in the latter arrangement, the Planner Scheduler control span should be held consistent to one planner/scheduler per twenty technicians (1:20). The split would be one material coordinator and one scheduling coordinator for every three planners (5/100 = 1/20). A primary consideration in the decision (Fig. 4) is remoteness of the work centers at which maintenance takes place.

Can be a special problem. Perhaps your customers know that you are already overloaded and ask why they should initiate any more requests? The reality is, if the work should be performed maintenance needs to know about it. It must be evaluated relative other demands with assignment of a priority ranking. An ignored maintenance problem might be catapulted to the forefront due to an accident, a production increase, an ergonomics push or a quality effort. 39 Chapter 5 If the job is not added into the controlled backlog the organization does not officially know about it.
