In other words, it should not attempt to tell the whole story, but picks on the most salient selling points. It may simply put the central character in the context of the genre. This is where you sell, not tell, the story. While this short statement (anywhere between 5 and 20 lines) must grab the reader’s attention, it is important to remember that there is a danger of overselling your work.

Writers must be prepared to accept the realities of the business, with all the problems of getting scripts produced. If they can’t, then they should write for another medium. If your passion is to write for the screen then try to improve the odds in your favour. Learn to manipulate people in the industry, just as much as you manipulate your characters. Accept that you are going to write scripts which you are paid for but which may never get made.
