This accounts partly for the primacy of fashion as an example of the excesses of consumer society under conditions of postmodernity. At a more commonsense level, the high cost, high turnover world of haute couture also illustrates the nature of postmodernity itself, in its heightening of the importance of representation and appearance to the construction of personal identity (see, for example, Faurschou, 1988). There are similar applications of the concepts of commodification and signification to the study of fashion.
