If anyone at this point had told me county cricket was easy, I’d have given them a real rev up. Even when I got to 80 I was still battling, and I spent the final hour of the day in the 90s (99 not out at stumps), but I was proud of the fact that I persisted. It was good for me and, I hope, a productive example for my team-mates, who I knew were looking to their overseas import for some runs and self-belief. That the innings gave us a platform to go on and win the match (I finished with 146, made in 438 minutes, and we won by seven wickets), and then enjoy a run of good form that had us in second place on the championship ladder as late as mid-June, was extremely satisfying.

Probably the most bizarre of these cases was Paul Reiffel, who bowled really well for Australia A throughout the competition and was rewarded by being ‘promoted’ to the 12th man’s job for Australia in the finals. Of course, I went the other way—dropped from the Australian team back to Australia A—which meant that in the finals I played against the same team I’d been a part of for the first half of the competition. The hundred I made for Australia A against England came from 102 balls, after I came in at 2–46.

In the second Test, in Melbourne, I scored 3 in 29 minutes in the first innings and 35 in 190 minutes in the second, hitting one four, and feeling as if I were in the dock on trial. Though we retained the Ashes in Sydney, after innings of 8 and 7, I was gone. Mentally I was never convinced I was playing the right shot, that I had the right line, had correctly judged the length. I have found that in these situations, you tend to think that you’re just starting to come good, and then you’ll get one nick and you’re out again.
