Remember, this was 1948. Joe was improving as a passer, and to increase his throwing ability he spent the entire summer vacation throwing a medicine ball against the cellar wall. It paid dividends. I shared fullback duties with a tough Jewish kid named Arnie Green. Arnie was a bit like Joe, he overcame a lack of natural skills with desire and toughness. He also was Ed Finn's buddy and fraternity brother from Sigma Chi. I seldom touched the ball when Finn was quarterback. Understanding the situation, it didn't bother me too much as I got my share of playing time, but it made me determined to win the fullback job the following season.
In his late teens he had joined the Cavalry and chased Pancho Villa in Mexico. He became an expert horseman and rose to the rank of Sergeant. Dad was still in the Army when World War I broke out. He went to Europe and the cavalry became the artillery, and Dad fought in the Argonne and Verdun campaigns. After the war, he stayed in the National Guard and became a Captain. So it was natural for him to take charge of Page 8 the Air Raid Wardens. As Joe's career started to take flight toward his present lofty position, too often he forgets to mention Dad.
The only goal Joe failed to accomplish at Brooklyn Prep was being voted captain of the football team in his senior year.
