Peter Furst was another young anthropologist who pioneered the academic study of psychedelic plants among different cultures. Over the years, Furst’s efforts have been particularly critical to understanding the use of peyote among the Huichol people of Northern Mexico and in the Native American Church. Like Michael Harner, through using plant sacraments himself, Peter Furst gained an enhanced appreciation of the cultural sophistication of indigenous peoples and the central role that such sacraments played in native cultures.
He later trained to become a shaman himself, and went on to make landmark contributions to the field of shamanism.
