The play I am going to show you is from the pistol set with a tight end in a wing set off the offensive tackle to the backside (Diagram #7). The defensive end is the read key. We bring the tight end flat to the line of scrimmage at the defensive end. The defensive end does not have time to think about what he should do. With the defensive end coming at him, the handoff vision is cloudy to him. It puts the defensive end in conflict as to what to do. He must make an immediate reaction. He has to turn his shoulders and close or the ball breaks into the hole.
When we cover back, we cover to the sidelines. I like the way we kick off and cover on kickoffs (Diagram #6). On our kickoff team, we have headhunters, coverage players, and safeties. The headhunters in the diagram #7, and #10. They can align at different places in the formation, but their responsibility is always the same. The headhunters are our more reckless players with good football instincts. They will go down and make a tackle. The coverage players take on blockers, read where he is trying to block them, and play across his face.
