The Cougars got an infusion of quickness when they signed Tim McTyer from Los Angeles Junior College in 1995. McTyer, who played safety and halfback in high school, earned All-America honors in junior college. A hard-hitting tackler, McTyer turned a lot of heads his junior year at BYU. Entering his senior season, McTyer gained 12 pounds and looked tougher than ever at his right cornerback spot. BYU's secondary had struggled in the early '90s. Working without depth or speed, many BYU championship teams in the Ty Detmer and John Walsh eras had to outscore opponents because opposing quarterbacks could pick on Cougar cover men and do a lot of damage.
