Erst im letzten Satz nimmt Plinius auf ihn direkt Bezug, allerdings in sehr warmem Ton. Er möchte wohl das freundschaftliche Porträt, das er von Cornutus Tertullus zeichnet, nicht durch den Ausdruck einer weiteren Freundschaft beeinträchtigen. C. Iulius Cornutus Tertullus (cos. suff. 100) ist Plinius im Hinblick auf die Karriere eng verbunden. Obschon er 15 oder mehr Jahre älter ist, haben sie Ämter zugleich bekleidet: Praefectura aerari Saturni (98-100) und Konsulat (100). Nun wird er Curator viae Aemiliae, während Plinius Curator alvei Tiberis et riparum et cloacarum urbis ist (104 /105-106 / 107).
