The commercial is often granted artistic respectability and it’s difficult for modern theatre artists to claim the popular as an instrument of radical subversion or political questioning. And in a time when the serious and challenging is often dismissed as elitist, we need to approach Brecht’s championing of the radical potential of popular culture with care. 25 Peasant Art Like many on the left, Brecht had a contradictory attitude towards the peasantry. While he knew that they played a key role in creating a new society and believed that only an alliance of the proletariat and the peasantry could spark a successful revolution, he was sceptical about the conservative tendencies of the people who live off the land.

The Bible is less resonant today than it was to Brecht’s contemporaries. But its simple narrative style is as compelling as ever, and we in the secular modern theatre can learn much from Brecht’s cunning appropriation of its dramatic power. 11 This slim volume of lecture notes had a huge impact on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century theories of mimesis, especially in Germany and France, where literary critics emphasised a unified narrative structure and spoke of the dual sensations of ‘pity and terror’ which, through a process of ‘empathy’, produced feelings of ‘catharsis’ in the audience.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle offers some of Brecht’s most enjoyable portraits of peasants: funny, eccentric and occasionally simple-minded, they also have wit, energy and vigour. In his notes to the play, he said that an actor playing a peasant should play an individual peasant, and that urban audiences will only understand the class as a whole when they see what connects the people that constitute that class. The crucial point is Brecht’s enduring commitment to those at the bottom of society – wherever they come from.
