There he was given the title “Master of the Sword” and wrote the regulations for the new weapon. He had used his connections once again to avoid being sent to the jungles of the Philippines with his unit. However, when American troops were dispatched to Vera Cruz, Mexico, in April 1914 to protect American business interests during a bitter civil war, Patton began a personal campaign to get himself posted to Fort Bliss at El Paso, Texas, on the Mexican border. There he attracted the attention of the new American commander, Brigadier General John J.

His historic onslaught was left sputtering as his tanks ran out of gas. The dogged German defense of the Channel ports had created tremendous fuel shortages. Patton pleaded for 400,000 gallons of gas to pursue the enemy into Germany and smash the retreating Germans before they could reorganize. In a single month, Patton had liberated almost all of France north of the Loire even as his armies attacked on three separate fronts, but now Eisenhower was reining him in.

To the end, Patton believed that Germany must be rebuilt to fight at the side of the Americans against the Soviet Union. After the Germans surrendered on May 8, 1945, his best units were peeled away and shipped to the Pacific Theater to finish the war with Japan. Patton was left behind as military governor of the American zone of occupied Germany. Flying home for the first time in nearly three years, he visited his native Los Angeles one last time. On June 9, crowds lined the streets as he rode alongside Air Force Lieutenant General Jimmy Doolittle to a reception in Memorial Coliseum jammed with 100,000 people.
