Its first few years have shown a slow uptake as practices are slow to adapt or update their established ‘in house’ systems. Its comprehensive use by designers and specifiers in both public and private sectors and its inclusion in all landscape work will lead to improvements in the quality of planted landscape. It is beginning to influence how plants are grown on the nursery, mainly in order to achieve the plant habit and branching structure advised within the specification. However, it does not yet address the issue of how the plant will establish in its new location.

Container-grown plants are more susceptible to frost or drought damage than open ground plants. They are often grown in glasshouses or polythene tunnels, and the root and shoot growth is softer and more frost sensitive. In order to come this, container plants should always be specified as being grown in the open (hardened off) for at least two months before being supplied to site. An added advantage is that plants supplied in spring will not have had their roots killed off in a previous severe winter.
