Euthyphro has brought criluinal charges against his father for the killing of a slave. Socrates encounters hilu in court before the trial, and after the two have agreed that bringing such charges raises the issue of filial piety, Socrates asked Euthyphro to explain to him the standard of holiness which justifies his suit. Euthyphro first begs the question by replying that what he is doing is holy; pressed by Socrates, he offers a definition of the holy as that which is pleasing to the gods. But Socrates, after pointing out that the gods often disagree among theluselves, raises the subtler question of whether what is holy pleases the gods.
