I however the extra I dug into pamphlets for this truth or that, the extra questions I had approximately their 2 modern function and function. Who wrote pamphlets and why? For whom have been they meant? How and by way of whom have been pamphlets delivered to press and dispensed, and what does this display? Why did their quantity elevate so drastically? Who learn them? How have been pamphlets diverse from different media? in brief, i started to view pamphlets now not as repositories of historic proof yet as a old phenomenon of their personal correct. three i've got hunted for solutions to those questions in governmental and church files, inner most letters, publishing documents and comparable fabrics approximately printers, booksellers, and pamphleteers, and naturally in pam phlets themselves. Table 5 shows the frequency of approximately 12 major themes-defined for practical purposes as topics present in at least one in ten titles over the entire period. I have not attempted to "score" each topic according to its weight within a given pamphlet, but on the other hand I have avoided coding insignificant levels of discussion.

Even in the Republic, "common man" or "people" were hardly allinclusive, clear-cut terms.

There was no statistically significant change over time in the forms used, though the table suggests that both types of directly persuasive ap- 43 The Appeal of Pamphlets proaches increased, while descriptive accounts of uncertain polemical value declined. Among best sellers the imaginative approach increased nearly four times during the second period, while other forms decreased. Some readers might wonder why, given my earlier discussion of the persuasive function of pamphlets, "reports" have been included at all.
