Fran could still legitimately complain: ‘Bar talk, bar talk. ’ Well, what else do you expect a dog to do? But that would prove to be a brief respite from real life as Fran would miscarriage, for the second time, and plunge her into a deep depression. It didn’t leave Jay in a much better state and this would be reflected in the final scenes of The Nervous Set, where the meaty pleasure principal and the bony cynicism suddenly turned black and bloody. Easier said than done of course. Legman came from a long tradition of looking a gift horse in the mouth and questioning the parentage of both beast and bone headed giver. Jay’s argument that he was tired of trying to change the world and was now going to do a bit of changing of himself struck the eternally leery Legman as whimsical and foolish.
