What is an image? 22 Although there are many types of images, three aspects of images – nature, space, and accuracy – will be used to define our topic, scientific images, and to restrict the discussion. Scientific images represent the universe – nature is our subject. Spatial information distinguishes scientific images. A scientific image explicitly expresses the spatial attributes of a scene, pattern, or object. Furthermore, it attempts to do so accurately. Mental, verbal, auditory, gustatory, imaginary, hallucinatory images – these are all images in that they are representations of something, and usually something related to our environment and the universe.
