The infant's most primitive definition of an object goes as follows: An object is a bounded volume of space in a place or on a path of movement. By a bounded volume of space I mean a volume with a top and bottom, a back and front, and a right bound and a left bound. If any of these bounds are missing, the infant does not treat the presented element as an object. The differences show up in looking behavior, patterns of discriminative responding (Bower, 1966) and, most crucially, in reaching itself.
Thus a spatial representation might be considered to have nominal properties when an infant could tell whether two objects were in the same or different places and nothing more. That is simply an ability to discriminate. In general we have not considered just ability to discriminate as implying by itself a spatial representation. However, recall that if there were stimulus convergence in a discrimination experiment we would be more willing to infer a spatial representation. Consider an instance in which an infant responded identically to the same distance even though defined by two quite different stimulus cues and, conversely, responded differently to two different distances when defined by the same type of stimulus information.
For example, if one asks, if Mommy is coming, an infant might look at the door from any place in his room. Again it would seem easy to conduct discrimination experiments with even younger infants analogous to the old place-versus-response experiments with rats. That is, one could teach an infant a left-right discrimination, then shift the apparatus in the room to see if he continued with the same egocentric response or the same place response. If he made a place response it would be possible to vary the external frame in various ways so as to determine what the effective reference system was.
