Because of the extremely short-range nature of the interaction forces, the potential behaves much like a delta function, and the deflection of the particle is almost completely determined by interactions which occur very near the distance of closest approach, ro. Stated otherwise, a cross section determined at a single energy essentially leads to a value of the potential at a single distance which may be taken as that of closest approach, and when cross sections are measured over a continuous range of energy, the resultant potential will be valid over a range of distance which lies between the extreme values of the distances ofclosest approach.

Generally speaking, this requires that E, be at least ten times V(ro). In practice, the energy range is more nearly a thousand times V(r,) since higher energy beams are more easily formed and detected. It is also important to set an upper limit on the energy. If the beam energy is too high, the effects of inelastic scattering become large and, in addition, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation may no longer be valid. While a precise value cannot be given for the highest desirable energy, later discussion may provide useful guides.
