Social Democrats and even a few communists had served the interests of the town’s blue-collar workers. With the banning of socialists and communists, these councilors lost their mandate, their parties disappeared from local elections, and the town council was dissolved. I had just lit a second one when I heard Oma’s shout, felt my legs jerked so violently that I landed at her feet, match in hand, singeing my fingers. In her terror, she struck me; later, she apologized for hitting me and said that I was better off being afraid of fire than playing with it. My fire phobia would be extinguished altogether a few years later, by fear of the war. Of the adults in this early period of my life, I remember my own parents the least. Most of the memories come from stories told to me by Mother and various relatives, and these stories paint Papa and Mama as people without much thought of anything but having fun.

In the mornings I felt fine about this since it was light, but during  the shame of survival the winter months it was dark when school let out at four. Parents waited at the school’s gate on the alley, but nobody came for me unless Oma was able to do so. Through the alley and along Grosse Kirchstrasse to City Hall Square, I stuck, mostly unnoticed, to a group of adults and children who were walking my way. From then on, I was on my own. I don’t remember ever talking to anyone on these homeward walks, but I admired some of the other children from afar — Gretl, who was popular with everybody, and Bertl, whose cropped blond woolly hair surrounded her face like a halo.
